# Specify the entity for a task

> Specify which entity a workflow task uses by selecting an entity, inheriting it from the workflow, or passing an entity ID at run time.

Specify which entity a workflow task uses by selecting an entity, inheriting it from the workflow, or passing an entity ID at run time.

For supported task types, an **Entity** dropdown is displayed at the top of the task settings page when the Workflow OAuth user has access to more than one entity.

Open the task in your workflow.

In the **Entity** dropdown, select the target entity.

Alternatively, leave the task **Entity** field blank to inherit the entity from the workflow-level **Entity Selection** setting.

You can also supply an entity ID at workflow run time by passing the `entity_id` workflow parameter when you run or trigger the workflow. This is useful when the target entity is determined dynamically for each run.

If the Workflow OAuth user has access to only one entity, the **Entity** field is not displayed and Workflow automatically uses the current entity that the workflow definition is created in.

To set a default entity for all tasks in a workflow from the workflow configuration settings:

1. Open the workflow definition.
2. Click the configuration (gear) icon to open workflow settings.
3. In the **Entity Selection** dropdown, select the default entity for the workflow.

Tasks that do not have a task-level entity configured inherit this workflow-level entity setting. You can override the workflow default by selecting a different entity on an individual task.
