# Managing status of entities

> A subentity in a multi-entity hierarchy has a status that controls whether the subentity appears in the entity hierarchy and whether you can reuse its name.

A subentity in a multi-entity hierarchy has a status that controls whether the subentity appears in the entity hierarchy and whether you can reuse its name.

Status determines how a subentity behaves in the entity hierarchy. You set status on individual subentities, and the status you can apply depends on the position of the subentity in the hierarchy.

## Expired status

You can set the status of a subentity to **Expired** only if the subentity is a leaf node, which is a subentity that has no child entities.

> **Note**
>
> You cannot set the status of a subentity that has child entities to **Expired**.

When a leaf-node subentity is set to **Expired**:

* The subentity no longer appears in the entity hierarchy.
* Zuora appends `Expired` to the original name of the subentity.
* You can create a new entity that uses the original name.

## Locked status

A subentity in **Locked** status continues to appear in the entity hierarchy.
